Room Reno #11: Modern Living Room

Welcome back to Room Reno #11 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping a couple who wants to turn their bland living room into a modern oasis. Let’s meet them!

Meet the Akins!

Marjorie and Stella Akins are a couple who just bought their first home together! They love being homeowners, but there’s just one problem: their new living room is totally bland. Marjorie wants a place to do work in her new living room (she’s a food critic), while Stella just wants a place to put her feet up and relax. They both love the modern style of decorating, which means I have my work cut out for me! Let’s see what we’re working with.

The Before

So, the basic living room that Marjorie and Stella’s house came with is…well, basic. One of my biggest issues with this room is the tiny windows on the TV wall compared to the massive window on the front wall–it makes the room totally unbalanced and also makes for a really weird amount of natural light. I also dislike how tall the walls are compared to the decorations in the room–there needs to either be more decor, or less wall. The shape of the room isn’t bad, though–the bones are definitely good enough to make this reno a success.

The Planning

Before I started planning, I actually took all the windows down–I knew I wanted to replace them before I even started the renovation! For the layout, I knew I needed a desk area for Marjorie to work at, as well as a couch and fireplace for Stella. I also decided to move the door over to the center of the front wall as well as to get a double door in order to help make the space feel larger. The staircase also needs to be switched out for something a little more modern to suit the style of the room better. Let’s get renovating!

The After

Here’s the before and after for Marjorie and Stella’s new living room! I really love how this space turned out, especially when looking back at how it started. The huge windows really open up the space a ton and make it feel even bigger. The stone fireplace is also a fun addition, as well as the triangular coffee table which brings a hint of 50’s decor to the space. Marjorie’s desk space is nestled under the brand new staircase, allowing her some privacy while she works without shutting her off completely from the rest of the room. I’m incredibly happy with how this renovation turned out and I think Marjorie and Stella are too!
