Welcome back to Room Reno #59 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping out a Sim who loves all things luxurious but who also loves color. Let’s see if we can give her the colorful, fancy room of her dreams.
Meet Jess!
Jess is a Sim living in the hills of Del Sol Valley (an oxy moron if I’ve ever heard one). She hosts a few fashion shows on the S Channel and loves to talk fashion and lifestyle tips on her Simstagram pages. Her new house, however, is not at all what she dreamed it would be! While she loves the modern style of the home, the all black and white interior is way too boring for her tastes. She wants to live in a home full of color and warmth, and her bedroom is where that starts.
I’m happy to say that Jess has a big budget and a lot of space to work with, which makes my job both easier and harder. The budget is always a plus–I can use whatever furniture I want without worrying about going over her budget. The space, however, is a little bit of a concern. The room she wants redone is essentially just a large rectangle, which means it’s up to me and my furnishing job to make it feel like more than an empty box or a stale space that needs some new life. Let’s see what we’re working with!
The Before
So this room is pretty depressing to look at, not gonna lie. It manages to be both too dark and too bright at the same time, which is a really strange feat to accomplish. Everything being blacks and grays makes it feel dark and depressing, but then with the natural light added in with the floor to ceiling windows and it feels like the designer wasn’t totally committed to the dark aesthetic. This shouldn’t be a hard fix, though–a fresh coat of paint on the walls and some new furniture and the windows should fit right in with the new aesthetic of the room.
The pops of color in the current room are also a little confusing to me. While I love an accent color in any neutral room, the current color comes from only two spots–the paintings next to one of the wardrobes. Not only do these paintings not quite match the room, but they don’t have the same colors or color families to pull from, which means their use as accent pieces are less effective than they could be. With some new furniture and wall art, this room can go from totally drab to totally glam–let’s get planning!
The Planning
The planning of this room started a lot more complicated than the diagram I’m showing you here. At first, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put a walk-in closet or just use one of the game’s premade closets, but after looking at them for a few minutes I decided that none of them gave the luxury vibe I was looking for as much as a walk-in closet did. Then I had to figure out where to put the closet itself.
See, walk-in closets aren’t small additions, and I didn’t want to make Jess’ room seem really tiny in comparison. I considered taking down a wall (or a few walls) in order to accommodate a larger walk-in, but the rest of this floor is most of the living area, which means that I didn’t have a ton of space to play around with when it came to how big I wanted to go with the walk-in closet. I eventually sectioned off one entire corner of the bedroom and designated that to be the walk-in, picking out some built in shelving and displays so that Jess can see all of her fabulous clothes and shoes at once while she picks an outfit. Let’s get building!
The After
Alright, so…I want to live in this room, and I want to live in this room right now. I really had no idea that the Get Famous bedroom set could be this versatile in the right color swatches. I usually would take a look at it and think it was way too gaudy or expensive for whatever room I was working on, but I have to say that in the right color and the right circumstances, it’s a really stunning set and I highly recommend trying it out in a build if you’ve never used it before–you might be surprised.
I was also surprised at just how well a lot of the Moschino Stuff pack went with this room. Since Jess is a Sim who loves fashion and design, I was really happy to actually use a lot of pieces from this stuff pack. It made the room pop and added a ton of character to it, much like Moschino’s products do in real life (this is not product placement, I just really love their little cleaning spray perfume bottles–seriously, google them, they’re so freaking cute). The little exclamation mirror is probably my favorite small part of the room.
For the first time in a while, most of the custom content I used in this build was actually for clutter and decoration instead of making up the larger furniture pieces. The biggest piece of CC I used was the hot pink fireplace–it is absolutely to die for and really brings the pop art and neon features of the rest of the sitting area. I also adore the giant painting I put in the sitting area. In such a big room, a big statement piece of art like that helps to draw the eye in a specific direction.
