Room Reno #91: Summer Bedroom

Welcome back to Room Reno #91 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping a Sim who wants to transform her childhood bedroom into a super cool summery spot. Let’s meet the Sim we’re helping!

Meet Selina!

Selina is a teen Sim living in Evergreen Harbor. She loves the town where she grew up, and recently aged up into a teen. Her parents have put aside some budget to redecorate and redesign her room, which is still decked out as it was for her childhood. While Selina will always think dinosaurs are cool, she hardly thinks that dinosaur wallpaper is appropriate for a super cool, newly aged up teenager! (Note: she may not think she’s cool, but she thinks that cool people wouldn’t have dino wallpaper. The author disagrees). She wants a bright, summery aesthetic for the renovated room, with lots of natural light for her painting and crafts since she loves art. A double bed instead of a single bed is a requested upgrade, as well as a desk with a computer for schoolwork and some gaming. Finally, Selina loves plants, so she wants lots of surfaces she can display them on. Let’s see what we’re working with!

The Before

This room is a little strangely laid out, but it has good bones. The bed on a diagonal certainly won’t work for a queen sized bed, but it’s definitely an interesting placement for now. The yellow color scheme is bright and cheery, though it probably will work better as an accent color in the updated room since Selina requested a summery theme. I really like the pastel wall colors and the multi-toned monochrome, though the dinosaurs are not the best (even if I personally adore dinos). Maybe some mini dinosaur accents will be a good touch in the renovated room!

The dollhouse will have to go to storage since Selina does not use it anymore, and the dresser will be swapped out for something larger that can fit more clothes of a larger size. I think another good renovation option will be to add a third window to the room to add the natural light that Selina wants to have for her art. I considered adding a gallery wall for Selina’s artwork, but I think having the ability to swap out different pieces of art would work much better and take up a lot less wall space, especially after losing some of that space with an added window. The windows in the house are great, quite large and almost stretching from the floor to the ceiling. I like that they allow for tons of light as well as adding some architectural interest by having the curved top section. Let’s get planning!

The Planning

Planning this space took a little finessing, but I eventually figured it out. I looked at a lot of inspiration photos of summery bedrooms and what the summer aesthetic features in most of those photos. Some general themes I found: a ton of plants (perfect, because Selina loves plants), lots of natural light, usually some sort of textured material used on the walls (like bricks or rock), and a white or light-colored bedspread. Most of these are fairly simple pieces of a room, but together they create a cozy but summery sort of vibe that I really dig, and Selina digs too. One particular area I took note of was how a lot of the rooms use unique storage options to display different trinkets or store different items.

The concept I went with for this room is a set of shelves or drawers directly behind the bed, forming a sort of headboard and also adding lots of storage and display space as noted earlier. Getting into the actual layout of the room, the bed will have to be placed a bit further into the room in order to fit with the drawers. An easel will fit on the side of the room near the door, and the desk will go across from the bed and entrance where there should be a bit more room. An armoire or dresser will go along the right wall, in between the two windows I will place there to bring light in that will cast upon the easel. Let’s get building!

The After

This room looks like somewhere I want to live! First of all, this custom content bed is one of my favorite recent finds. It has storage options underneath and comes in a variety of swatches that correspond to different color schemes. The pale pink worked perfectly for this room, and helped me to pick a wood tone – a light, pale wood worked nicely without clashing with the carpet (I actually left carpet on the floor of a build – who would have imagined!). I brought the brick from the exterior to the house and brought it inside, placing it on the interior wall and one of the exterior walls (though I suppose it would make more sense if it was both exterior walls, I’m sort of pretending it’s that brick printed contact paper).

It looks very nice regardless, and I really enjoy the contrast between the brick and the very natural plants. The plants may have actually taken longer for me to place than any other part of this build, and I think it’s just because I have so many different sizes and shapes of plants downloaded that I wanted to try them all! I think the options I chose turned out well, though part of me wanted to add even more and use less trinkets. I’m also very happy with the desk area – the CC computer with tower and keyboard are some of my favorite pieces to use, and it worked perfectly in this room too!
