The Sims 4 Marketplace: Players Opinions
Electronic Arts recently released news on the upcoming Marketplace that will allow players to buy custom content from creators. If you’ve played The Sims 3, then you’re familiar with the idea of an in-game store where you can buy extra content. It’s not a new concept as EA has done it once before, but many are not enthused by the idea. They claim that DLC is already too expensive and why would players pay for custom content when you can get it for free?
While that is true, Electronic Arts most likely expects console players to be the biggest stream of income from in-game store, as those who play on computer have endless, free custom content at their fingertips. And while the idea is not a terrible one, many players feel as if it will crash and burn. Between Expansion Packs, Game Packs, Stuff Packs and Kits, the game is already well over $1,000 USD. Add on micro-transactions makes many players feel as though Electronic Arts only cares about the money. Even insiders from Maxis allegedly disagree with this idea!
Very few players seem to be excited about the Marketplace, swearing not to touch it, no matter the content. Even fewer are excited about it. As this mostly benefits console players, they are excited by the idea, as they are being given the opportunity to have custom content.
Pricing And Honesty
Most players feel that Electronic Arts is not being entirely open about this idea. Apparently, creators only get a 30% cut from the earnings while EA gets the remaining 70%. Players do not like the idea at all. Some even mention that why would creators go to the Marketplace when they can get the full amount of money from Patreon.
A post by Thiredistia on r/Sims4 sparked a heated discussion, with hundreds of players calling the revenue split dishonest and predatory.
