Welcome back to The Sims Resource! This week we’re exploring the leads from the latest addition to the MCU, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in a Shang-Chi inspired lookbook! Not only is the movie action-packed and visually stunning, it’s also full of heart and strong emotional performances. Let’s head into the lookbook, but beware–there are spoilers ahead!
Shang-Chi is a breath of fresh air in the lexicon of Marvel heroes. Despite his father’s great legacy, he manages to stay fun-loving and kind, especially to his best friend Katy. I like how deeply Shang-Chi cares for his family, especially his sister, and how much he wants to grow beyond what his father turned him into, which he is ultimately successful at doing. There are a lot of superhero stories about fathers and sons, but I found Shang-Chi’s to be particularly touching.
Katy is Shang-Chi’s best friend, but there’s absolutely more to her than just that. Whipsmart but without a strong sense of direction, Katy spends much of the film trying to learn more about what she wants to do with her life as she travels the world and eventually to the mystical land of Ta Lo. There, she finds a newfound sense of confidence in her own abilities, helping to take down the Dweller-in-Darkness with what can only be described as a 360 noscope arrow shot. I’m excited to see Katy in future Marvel projects–she clearly has a bright future ahead of her.
Wenwu is a complex character, far more than just another superhero villain. After the murder of his wife, he obsesses over finding a way to get revenge and bring her back, to the detriment of his living family members. While his actions are in no way excusable, there’s a certain relatability–haven’t we all had moments of grief where we would do anything to stop the hurt? Wenwu finally realizes the damage he’s done to his own children and sacrifices himself to save his son, completing his arc and making for an incredibly emotional moment in the film’s climax. Rest in peace, Wenwu.
Xialing is Shang-Chi’s younger sister, though she clearly never let her age (or gender) stop her from keeping up with him. Despite being overlooked and ignored for most of her childhood, Xialing created a fighting ring empire in Macau all on her own, and even manages to retake the Ten Rings organization as its new leader by the end of the film. I’m very interested to see what Xialing does next–I think it’ll be a huge power play that will flip a lot of the MCU on its head.
