Room Reno #99: Neutral Dorm

This Modern Luxe Kit blog is brought to you by the EA Creator Network Program.

Welcome back to Room Reno #99 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping a Sim who wants to have a fabulous, luxurious dorm using the brand new Modern Luxe Kit. Let’s meet the Sim we’re helping!

Meet Selina!

Meet Selina! She’s a new student at University of Britechester, and while she’s definitely looking forward to all the classes and clubs, she’s extra excited for her dorm. She loved decorating her childhood bedroom, and has been planning just the vibe she wants for her dorm for months, from the color scheme to the layout. She wasn’t quite sure if her plans would work out when move in day arrived, and some of them were a bit too ambitious to work in a college dorm sized space. But many of her asks were perfect for the prestigious older dorm building at Britechester, so they just had to be completed. Let’s see what we’re working with!

The Before

This door certainly is…a dorm! In a lot of ways, it’s actually nicer than most college dorms. The molded paneling on the wall is definitely a lot nicer than most of the dorms I’ve seen – it’s a pretty huge step up from cinderblock! The furniture right now is standard dorm furniture, but this is Room Reno #99, so she’ll be allowed to bring in all new furniture (don’t you just love The Sims?).

The carpet has a nice design in it (though it may be a liability when it comes to spills), so it’ll probably be left as is for the renovation. The current layout isn’t quite what I would do with the two bed setup, which is necessary because Selina is expecting a roommate. With the ability to add new furniture and swap out the basic dorm stuff, I think there’s a ton of potential in this space, especially with how generously sized it is. The wall color might have to change, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Let’s get planning!

The Planning

This is the rough layout I settled on for the dorm room. Instead of both beds being along the wall across from the door, I wanted them both to sit along the side walls of the room (with the heads in the corners). I placed desks near each bed – next to the bed to the left of the entrance, where Selina’s roommate will sleep and work, and the other desk right in front of the bed. This can be a great way to visually divide an area in smaller spaces, though in most rooms I would usually do it with a dresser instead of a desk.

I wanted to place a large vanity for the girls to get ready at, so that went next to Selina’s bed. The rest of the open space will be filled with clothing storage as well as some open area in the middle of the floor for everything a college student would need – yoga, workouts, or even gossip sessions! With the layout all worked out, let’s get building!

The After

I absolutely adore how this dorm turned out! Using furniture from the Modern Luxe kit was the perfect decision for this space, as it fits Selina’s neutral tastes without being too bland or boring looking. I love all the gold accents and how they tie the room together, from the bookshelf to the vanity to the wall shelves and even the mirror! The wall art is beautiful too – I ended up using two swatches to go around the vanity because I loved how the art was both subdued and colorful.

I adore the chair that matches the vanity and stool – it added an element of coziness to the dorm that felt very needed. And the area rug is to die for! I loved all the swatches, but this white, gray, and pink option was just what the dorm needed to feel cozy but not cramped. In terms of furniture placement, I went with a bookshelf in between Selina’s bed and desk, partially to obscure the view of her if she’s trying to sleep while someone comes in (nobody wants their bedhead to be seen!) and partially to use it as a sort of room divider between the ‘study space’ and ‘bed space’.
