Welcome back to Room Reno #88 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping a Sim who wants to give his daughter the greatest playroom ever! Let’s meet the Sim we’re helping.
Meet Taylor and Kayla!
Taylor is a single dad who recently got a new place in Willow Creek! It has lots of natural light and has mostly original fixtures and features, which lends a great vintage charm to the home. The house has three bedrooms, and he wants to use one of them to create a playroom for his daughter Kayla, a toddler. He wants her to be able to learn and grow as much as possible while she’s little, so he wants her playroom to have lots of skill building objects as well as the standards needed for a rambunctious toddler who wants to get into everything she can! Kayla is curious and loves her dad more than anything, so I’m sure her skills will level up incredibly fast (and gain that awesome bonus that happy Sim toddlers get for the rest of their lives)! Let’s see what this room could use and what we can get working with.
The Before
This room is a very basic setup – the previous owners used it for storage, so right now it’s pretty much a blank slate for playroom makeover shenanigans. A small rectangular room is great to work with, though a little tiny bit more room would have been great. Older homes tend to be a bit smaller though, so that’s to be expected. For a little one’s playroom, this is more than enough space for sure! The windows allow for some great exposure to natural light, and the dresser can easily be moved out and replaced with something like a changing table or toys for Kayla to play with. The current wall color is light blue – it is pretty inoffensive, but I think changing up the color scheme to suit what Kayla wants is more important so that the playroom becomes somewhere she wants to spend her time learning and playing with her dad. Kayla’s favorite colors are pinks and purples, so I would like her room to be a pinky purple-y sunset-y dream. Think the sunset dress Padme wears in Star Wars – that sort of color scheme. Also, getting some better lighting in here is a must! The subtle saucer lights are a total need in most Sims builds – they make every space look incredible and bright without having to take up tiles of floor space. Plus you can combine them with in room lighting to make a really cool custom lighting setup, even changing some lights to have custom colors and looks. Let’s get planning!
The Planning
The layout for this room is pretty simple, since it’s not an enormous space to work with. Because this home is an older one, the rooms are pretty segmented and are on the smaller side. That means that this won’t be the largest playroom of all time, but it will definitely have a lot of charm (and work great as a space for a tiny little toddler). The changing table is an absolute must – Kayla is not potty trained yet, and while there will be a training toilet in the room a changing table will save a lot of time and energy on her father’s part (carrying her to another room to change her is a lot of extra work!).
A fantastic dollhouse will go in the back left corner, since dollhouses are great for improving a toddler sim’s imagination skill (and can also be used to improve a child sim’s creativity skill). The dollhouse is going to take a lot of space, but it’s worth it for the great skill gains that Kayla can make by using it! A high chair will go in the back right corner so Kayla can eat some of her meals in the playroom if she’s having way too much fun to leave! A bookshelf full of toddler friendly texts will complete the large furniture in the room, though the toddler bookshelf is a smaller and cuter version than the huge ones that you’d see in a library. Let’s get building!
The After
This playroom is absolutely adorable! I know that most kiddie things turn out to be adorable, but this might take the cake. I love the sheer floral curtains, which don’t block the light while also bringing visual interest to the walls, along with the hanging plants – a great way to bring plants into the space without putting them within reach of the little one, because that could get pretty messy (or be a lot of fun before getting super messy). The color blocked walls are *chef’s kiss* – I know I use them in a lot of renovations, but they do a great job to break up the vertical line of the walls while also creating a bit of a blend between the wall and ceiling.
Gotta love proportionizing, even when it comes to walls! Most of the pieces in this room are fairly standard when it comes to toddler playrooms, so I went pretty ham with the decorations in order to bring the space away from being strictly functional and make it aesthetically pleasing as well. That can be a hard balance in a space made for kids – they have to learn and grow as they are meant to, and that usually means a lot of messes! But a lived in space can still be beautiful, and that’s my goal with this renovation! Even when the room is covered in chaos and toys, it’s still going to be a great playroom! I hope Kayla enjoys her playroom for many Sim days to come.
