Room Reno #86: Infant Bedroom

Welcome back to Room Reno #86 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping a Sim family who wants to create an adorable bedroom for their infant daughter. Let’s meet the Sims we’re helping!

Meet the Roths!

The Roths are a family living in Willow Creek. They love their old-fashioned, Victorian style home, but they need to renovate one of the bedrooms for their daughter Eloise, an infant. Luckily, their house has the bedrooms to spare, but they want to give Eloise the bedroom with the balcony out to the front of the house (a very special bedroom!), which means working around a double door when it comes to furnishing.

It means a ton of natural light in the room, though, which is a always great thing to have to warm up a space and make it happy and functional during the day and soothing and calm at night. Getting a lot of daylight is the best! Since Eloise is only an infant, she doesn’t have a ton of needs when it comes to furniture pieces, so her parents have requested some comfy chairs in her room as well for them to relax in as they care for her. Let’s see what we’re working with!

The Before

This room is a pretty good kids’ room! Very green, for sure, but the room itself would be super cute for a child Sim. Unfortunately, baby Eloise is an infant, so all of this furniture and styling will have to go. I really like the double door feature of this room that leads onto a balcony. I am not sure if I would use it for a kids’ room in real life, but I think it’s a very cool architectural feature in the game. Balconies are cool, and I would love to have one! One thing that’s definitely going to change in this room is the wall color. It’s a very bright green, and with all the light coming in from one source (the doors), I want to help the room stay light and soothing by going with a softer pastel or neutral color instead of a bright one to keep the room feeling light. The furniture placement is fine, but I think the room could use a little more visual interest towards the center of the space instead of having everything pushed up against the walls. I know that that is a frequent interior decorating ‘trap’ that people tend to fall into, but rooms look a lot more interesting when you have something out in the center of the room, even if it’s just a coffee table. Let’s get planning!

The Planning

This room is sort of a weird shape, to be honest. While it’s pretty close to being square, it definitely has some bump-ins that create a less than ideal shape for the room to exist as. It can still be worked with, though, and that’s what I did! I put a large bookshelf against the wall near the double door, because I’m sure little Eloise will have lots of books being read to her and because bookshelves can be used as storage outside of just books! Open your minds to the many possibilities of bookshelves and I’m sure you’ll find that they can be used for anything from clothes to trinkets if you find the right storage method (cute, aesthetic bins can hide anything you don’t want seen!).

In this case, the shelf will be used for books, trinkets, and plants since there will also be a dresser on the wall opposite the door. I put a changing table on the wall to the left of the interior door. I really love that changing tables are now functional in the game! I remember placing them as just decorations in years past, and it’s exciting to be able to use them for real. Finally, I put the crib sticking out from the wall to the right of the door. I know a lot of folks put their cribs flat against the wall, but I thought this room could use a little more visual interest towards the middle of the room, so I had the crib stick out and become more of a decorative focal point. Let’s get building!

The After

This nursery turned out absolutely adorable! I love the color scheme for little Eloise and I love how simple but sweet it turned out. Pastels are considered pretty standard for nursery color schemes, but I think they work really well in rooms like this for a reason. I really liked incorporating some slightly edgier furniture pieces in here too, like the dresser and the repurposed armchair, along with the traditionally sweet rocking chair and the cute house shaped bookshelf. Juxtaposition is the name of the game in most rooms, but I think it really shines in simpler rooms with simpler color schemes like this one. The bookshelf allowed for some totally adorable trinket displays, too. Try and think of bookshelves as more than just spaces for books – they allow for a ton of personality and style to shine through in a microcosm of the larger room. I also really love the star mural on the blue wall behind the crib. It’s a little different than just having some large pieces of art behind the bed, which is what I usually do, and I think it pays off in a more minimalist way than that, which suits the nature of the room, which is overall pretty simplistic and minimalist. The strange bump – ins and the other features of the room made it a little hard to screenshot, but I think it turned out totally sweet as a simple but adorable space for little Eloise to grow in.
