Room Reno #84: Dark Boho Bedroom

Welcome back to Room Reno #84 here at The Sims Resource! Today we’re helping a Sim who wants a beautiful dark bohemian space created in her bedroom. Let’s meet the Sim we’re helping!

Meet Stella!

Stella is a Sim who absolutely loves the bohemian chic movement, which has been trending since the late aughts and is a combination of hippie and bohemian pieces with more upscale and fancy styling. This trend has recently been transformed even further with the emergence of the dark boho interior design movement, which takes boho chic and combines it with “layers of natural texture, eclectic decor, and moody hues“.

This means the regular bright and sunny boho aesthetic can now be used by folks who appreciate the pattern layering and other aspects but who are turned off (or just are not fans of) the super bright color and pattern layering one often thinks of when thinking about boho room aesthetics. It can also be used to bring in just a little more pattern into a room that could be turning too minimalist or dark for someone’s tastes without going hard in the other direction and making it overwhelming. Stella is looking for a bedroom makeover that takes her space from blah to dark boho, so let’s see what we’re working with!

The Before

This room has a lot of potential, though it has some strange detailing too. I really like how big it is, since it takes up the entire top floor of this building, though that also means there’s going to be a door right near the middle of one of the walls, and a big glass door on the other wall, so that’s just something to keep in mind when placing large pieces of furniture like beds, desks, or dressers. I’m also a little confused by the three tiles of brick wallpaper being used behind the armoire, though I think it can be put to good use by expanding the brick all the way down the wall and onto one of the other walls.

Exposed brick, even if it’s faux exposed brick, is one of my favorite ways to dress up a space that could use a little more textural or color interest without making it too colorful since the brick is basically a neutral when it comes to building. This brick trick (hehe, nice rhyme!) can also be applied to stone accent walls or full wood paneled accent walls as well. The more you know! Anyway, the little “desk nook” that the room has is basically only usable for a desk or a two tile dresser, so I think I am going to use that spot for a desk or a vanity – never change room layouts that work for you! Let’s get planning.

The Planning

I’m keeping the planning sort of similar to how the room was already laid out, but I’m making a few larger changes. First, the desk area is going to be used as a vanity area as I mentioned above, to make a good use of the little two tile space that is created by the stairs leading up to the bedroom. I’m actually going to remove the armoire in lieu of actually using an open space that was already created in the wall to add in a built in closet from the Get to Work pack, since it already fit so nicely in there.

I think this was meant to be a chimney space, but since this is the Sims I am all about space maximizing (even if it’s a little unrealistic). Plus, I always forget to add those closets in my personal builds and I think they’re actually pretty cool. I’m moving the bed across from the stairs because I think left a lot more space for bed furnishings like bedside tables without having to worry about overlapping the stairs or glass sliding door, and because I think it’s just nice to have a big open space dedicated to the best activity of all: sleep! I am going to move the dresser to the window space across from the stairs so that there’s even more clothing storage space, because you can never have too much (trust me). Let’s get building!

The After

I really love how this room turned out! Number one: check out those expanded brick accent walls! I meant it when I said brick could be an accent color. You can cheat this look by getting vinyl temporary wallpaper in real life. The best part of that is that you can actually take it down without damaging the walls when you’re done (if you take it down properly). I think it brings a lot of character to this room without completely removing the dark boho vibes that Stella was looking for. The split-color walls also help with this, bringing in some white without overpowering the room color in it. The mixed pattern in the rug and the bedspread and even the fabric headboard also add to the dark boho traits of the space.

I went pretty ham with decorations in this room, too. I love the little stack of old suitcases with the record player in the corner by the dresser, it makes me want to go out and buy a record player right now even though it probably won’t look as cool as the one in the game. Custom content art prints are also an instant way for you to dress up a room in the game much like it is in real life, and I used them to decorate the wall above the stairs and the record player corner to add some visual interest. I kept the wood accents light in this room to balance out all the dark colors in the fabrics, but I think it would look just as cool with dark accents, too.
