There are so many different reasons Simmers play the Sims. Today, we are looking at why Team TSR picked up the game. As someone who has played since almost day one, I can say that I absolutely love the Sims and understand entirely why so many people do. The Sims is a life simulator game that allows players to decide which direction to take in their gameplay. There are so many options, such as the Simmer build, making Sims, renovating rooms, creating a story, completing challenges, or doing it all. So, let’s find out how Team TSR became Simmers.

Before we get into how we became Simmers, we need to talk about how amazing this twenty-five-year-old game is. Yes, the Sims are turning twenty-five in February, and the game is still going! The ability to play the game in many different ways and have loads of creative freedom are some of the reasons that make The Sims such an iconic game even today.

I asked The TSR Team how they got into Simming for this blog. So here are seven totally different perspectives on what got them into the Sims. Many of us here at TSR have been playing the game since the original Sims! What is incredible is that we are a Sims fansite for you by actual Sims fans.

I started simming in the Sims one era; I remember being just a kid and playing it on my parent’s pc. Then I got back into simming when the Sims 3 came out. I played Sims 2 occasionally, but I didn’t turn into a big Sims player till Sims 3. That’s when I started modding the game and using CC. I used to get an expansion pack every Christmas. I still love going back and playing Sims 2 and 3 to this day!

I started playing Sims 1 when it was released. My dad brought it home for me one day, and I was only 5/6 years old and didn’t fully understand what was happening. Michael Bachelor, in particular, had a very rough life thanks to me, where I learned the ropes of the game, often ending in his demise. I moved on to 2, 3, and 4 as they were released. Growing up alongside them and many of my faves like Sims Bustin Out and the Sims 2 side stories such as Castaway!

My favorite thing about the Sims is the freedom. I can recreate my entire life within the game or explore alternate paths opposite my real life. I also love cooking in The Sims, the polar opposite of my burnt-toast life.

Betty

I became a Simmer when I was in High School, around 15 years ago. I was introduced to the game by a friend who was super into The Sims and gaming in general. She would make little versions of all of us in the game at sleepovers. We’d sit and watch all our characters’ silly interactions, which was so fun.

I couldn’t afford the latest game myself then, so I purchased a cheaper and slightly older version. Even so, I would still sit up for hours & hours, getting lost in my little simulated world. I adored making my character into the version I envisioned myself as and designing my dream home. It was definitely a fun time in my life. To this day, I still adore being a Simmer – and knowing more about how to play mods and cheats has definitely enhanced my gaming experience and boosted my love for The Sims.

A long time ago, in the year 2000, I received the Sims 1 as a Christmas Present from my current boyfriend in school. Little did I know here that this thoughtful gift would develop into a 24-year gaming adventure. Oh… That sounds terrifying, playing The Sims for over 24 years. What! Wow! Ok, so moving on, I played my Simself and actually played the gameplay initially. My friends would come over and make their Sims, and I would find various ways to ‘remove’ them from my house. I kept my simself single and alone and enjoyed my friends’ Sims  ‘disappearing mysteriously’ in pools with no ladders…

Ever since I started Simming, I have loved the creative freedom of being able to play the game in various different ways. What began as my go-to after-school activity has turned into so much more. Now, I have converted most of my family and friends into playing the game.

Since childhood, I created characters and drew stories about them with my brother. When The Sims was released, our idea of drawing materialized for the game. As soon as I started playing, I made our characters from the drawings in the game and created new stories. That was basically it. I always liked games that could recreate what we experience in real life.

I started playing since the Day 1 release of Sims 1! My mom and I lined up and Office Max (yes, Office Max, the good times we had to buy the game CDs) because she thought I’d play games after sinking hours into Barbie Fashion Designer and Barbie Storymaker. I still remember how awful my first Sims home was and how horrified I was when the fire went off for the first time ever. 24+ years later, I am still setting the fires in my Sims house – but my Sims look so much more stylish, at least when panicking.

I came pretty late to gaming by today’s standards, but PC and console gaming were still getting started in the late ’90s. (yes, I’m ancient). I had just moved in with my partner (of 28 years now), and I think we had just purchased our first console. I came across the Sims 1 at a local retailer and was so impressed that the developers had included same-sex coupling in a REAL-life simulator that I just had to try it.

Almost 30 years later, after several iterations invested, I’ve been hooked on this bloody game for most of my adult life. My credo is that you’re never too old to have a happy childhood, and playing with my digital dollhouses fits that need perfectly.
